Fuel Prices Drop Again on August 7

Petrol and diesel both got cheaper from August 7. The cut offers a small break after the rise a day earlier.
The government reduced petrol by Rs3.19 per litre. It now costs Rs329.82. High-speed diesel fell by Rs1.50 per litre to Rs382.36. The new rates took effect at midnight and will remain in effect until the next daily update.
This change follows the daily pricing system in place since mid-July. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority sets the rates each day. It tracks average international oil prices over the past seven working days and the rupee’s value against the dollar. Global markets remain unsettled by US-Iran tensions, so local prices keep shifting.
Petrol is the fuel most private car, motorcycle and rickshaw users buy. Diesel matters more for trucks, buses, farms and industry. A drop like this eases the load a little for both groups.
Taxes stay high. The government still collects Rs110 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs96 per litre on diesel. Petroleum levy on diesel has edged up in recent days, but the overall tax burden remains the same for now.

Recent Daily Price Moves
Prices have swung almost every day under the new system. One day they rise, the next they fall. The overall level is still higher than mid-July.

Petrol is now about Rs19 higher than the mid-July starting point. Diesel is still more than Rs59 higher. Earlier this year both fuels hit much steeper peaks petrol above Rs450 and diesel above Rs520 in April.
Petroleum dealers continue to push back against daily changes. They say the frequent shifts make planning hard and raise costs. For everyday users, the effect is simpler: the amount you pay at the pump can change overnight.
