People traveling between Lahore and Rawalpindi are in for a surprise, train fares just went up again.
Pakistan Railways has increased ticket prices for both economy and AC classes, blaming higher fuel costs and repair expenses. The hike ranges roughly between 5% and 10%, depending on the class and service.
An official said the move was “unavoidable,” adding that maintenance costs for old coaches and rising diesel prices have pushed the department to make tough choices.
Commuters React
Regular travelers aren’t taking the news lightly. Many say it’s becoming harder to afford daily trips when fares keep changing every few months. Others hope the extra money will actually go toward improving train services, cleaner seats, better punctuality, and working fans wouldn’t hurt.
Railways’ Response
The department insists that passengers will see some visible upgrades soon. Among them:
Better seating and cleaner coaches
- Security checks and CCTV at major stations
- Faster ticketing through online and digital systems
- Fresh snacks and drinks on board long routes
The Bigger Picture
Pakistan Railways has its own old traditions, like slow commission resource, but it's looking alert toward the modernization while keeping fares reasonable. Inflation and fuel hikes have made that nearly impossible.
It amazing that despite the rise, most passengers say they’ll stick with the train. It’s cheaper than buses. Between these two cities, travel can be safer for families, and still one of the few ways to travel comfortably.
