Sazgar to Start Local Assembly of Three GWM Vehicles in Pakistan
Xiaomi delivered over 100,000 EVs in Q3 2025, hitting its annual 350,000 target early and posting its first EV division profit. Revenue, margins, and store expansion signal Xiaomi’s rapid rise in China’s electric vehicle market.

Sazgar Engineering just announced a big move. The company will soon assemble three Great Wall Motors (GWM) models right here in Pakistan: the Tank 500, Poer Canon, and Poer Canon Alpha. Production should kick off by March 2026.
This is the first time full-size GWM SUVs and pickups will be built locally. Until now, buyers paid heavy import duties on completely built-up units. Local assembly changes everything.
Which Models Are Coming?
Tank 500
The Tank 500 is the flagship. It’s a proper seven-seater body-on-frame SUV that competes with the Land Cruiser Prado and Fortuner in size and ability.
- HEV version (hybrid, 7 seats)
- PHEV version (plug-in hybrid, 5 seats)
Both use a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine paired with electric motors. No diesel option for the Tank 500 in Pakistan.
Poer Canon and Poer Canon Alpha
These are the double-cab pickup versions (GWM calls them “Poer” globally, same as the international P-Series).
Both trucks will come with petrol and normal hybrid powertrains. GWM decided to skip diesel here because current fuel quality in Pakistan can damage modern high-pressure diesel systems. Sticking to petrol and hybrid keeps the engines happy and warranties intact.
Big Price Drop Expected
The current imported Tank 500 costs well above Rs. 3.5 crore after taxes and freight. Once Sazgar starts local production, the price should fall under Rs. 2.5 crore.
That’s still not cheap, but it puts the Tank 500 in reach for many more buyers who want a premium ladder-frame SUV with hybrid tech and proper off-road hardware.
The Poer pickups will also cost much less than today’s grey-market imports.
Plant Expansion Already Under Way
Sazgar isn’t waiting. The company is adding new lines at its existing factory to handle the bigger vehicles. More welding robots, paint shop upgrades, and a larger assembly hall are part of the plan. The goal is simple: build more cars, faster, once the CKD kits start arriving from China.
Why This Matters for Buyers
- Lower prices thanks to reduced import duties on parts
- Official warranty and service through Sazgar’s existing network
- Hybrid powertrains that save fuel in city traffic
- Vehicles built for Pakistan’s roads and fuel
And because these are proper body-on-frame vehicles, they should handle rough roads, overloading, and floods better than most crossovers on sale today.
Timeline
Bookings might open late 2025. First customer deliveries are expected in the first half of 2026, pending the completion of the plant expansion and the arrival of CKD kits.
If you’ve been eyeing a big hybrid SUV or a capable pickup, keep an eye on Sazgar’s announcements in the coming months. This could be the most interesting launch Pakistan’s auto market has seen in years.
