BYD is quietly putting up a giant factory complex in Zhengzhou, China. When it’s finished, the whole site will cover about 50 square miles. For scale, San Francisco fits inside 46 square miles. So yes, this place will be bigger than an entire American city.

It’s More Than Just Factories

They’re not only building assembly lines. The plan includes:

  • Apartment blocks for workers

  • Sports fields and gyms

  • Parks and shops

Workers will live, eat, play, and build cars without ever leaving the grounds if they don’t want to.

How Much Is Actually Done?

Some outlets say construction is flying ahead between “Phase Five and Phase Eight.” Satellite photos tell a calmer story. Right now, around 8 square miles look finished. Still huge, but not 50 yet. Dirt is moving fast, though.

They Need a Lot More People

BYD already has over 900,000 employees worldwide. In the next three months, they want to hire another 200,000. The Zhengzhou site alone already has roughly 60,000 people clocking in every day.

Why Build Something This Big?

Simple. BYD sold more plug, in cars than anyone else last year. Demand keeps climbing. Instead of scattering new plants across the country, they’re putting everything in one spot: batteries, motors, body stamping, and final assembly. Shorter distances, lower costs, faster production.

If the full 50 square miles ever get built out, this single location could pump out millions of EVs a year and house most of the people who make them.

For now, cranes are still swinging and new dorms keep going up. It’s the biggest factory project running on the planet right now, and most people outside China haven’t heard a word about it.
