Pakistan’s auto sector is moving toward a new policy, and the big question for buyers is simple: will car prices fall soon?

The government has reportedly approved a new auto policy after months of talks and revisions. But the full tariff, tax, and implementation notifications have not been published yet. That means the broad direction is known, but the final effect on showroom prices is still not.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan announced the policy in Islamabad. The plan puts six goals at the centre: cheaper vehicles for middle- and lower-middle-income buyers, higher exports, more local manufacturing, better safety, electric vehicle support, and more transparency in the auto sector.

What this means for buyers

The clearest message from the announcement is that the government wants cars to become more affordable over time. But buyers should not expect an instant price drop from the policy alone.

The final tax and duty structure has not been shared yet. Without that, it is not possible to say how much petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle prices may change. Even if duties are lowered in some areas, exchange rates, imported parts costs, and company pricing can still keep cars expensive.

For now, the announcement should be seen as a policy direction, not a final price promise.

EVs stay central

Electric vehicles remain one of the biggest parts of the new plan. That matters because Pakistan already has a separate National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025-30, which aims for a 30% share of EVs in new sales by 2030.

The new auto policy appears to support the same shift. Lower tariffs, easier financing, and support for New Energy Vehicles were part of earlier draft ideas. But those details are not final until the government issues the full policy and related notifications.

For readers considering an EV, this is a good time to study charging access, warranty coverage, service support, and financing terms. If you want a broader background on the market, see Electric Vehicles in Pakistan: The Complete Guide 2026 and What Are Electric Vehicles and How Do They Work?.

Localisation, exports and safety

The policy also places strong weight on local manufacturing and exports. That could help the industry in the long run if it leads to more parts being made locally and better investment in production. It may also shape which models are offered in Pakistan and how companies plan future assembly.

Vehicle safety is another stated priority. Earlier policy drafts had pointed toward tougher testing, certification, audits, and stronger safety standards for both local and imported vehicles. Those ideas now appear to remain part of the wider policy direction.

The 20% booking amount rule

One consumer-friendly step linked to the transparency goal is the reported limit on booking amounts. Automakers and assemblers should not charge more than 20% of a vehicle’s total price as booking money.

That is useful for buyers, but the exact enforcement method is still unclear. Anyone booking a car should still ask for a written receipt, refund terms, delivery timeline, and full price breakdown before paying.

Should you buy now or wait?

If you need a car urgently, compare current published prices and do not assume a future discount.

If your purchase can wait, it makes sense to hold off until the government releases the full policy, tax schedule, and notifications. Those papers will show whether the promised changes are real, how soon they start, and which vehicles benefit most.

For now, Pakistan’s auto policy looks positive for buyers on paper. But until the details are published, no model-specific price cut should be treated as confirmed.
