Waiting for a bus in Punjab just got a lot less painful.
The provincial government has approved 1,362 brand-new, properly designed bus shelters across the province. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz isn’t playing around; she’s given contractors just 45 to 60 days to finish them.
Work Has Already Started Fast
Right now, 588 shelters are being built. Tenders for another 774 have been finalized, and work will start any day.
That means in less than two months, over a thousand proper waiting spots will appear on roads where people currently stand in the sun, rain, or dust.
These Aren’t the Old Rusty Shelters
The new ones are actually made for people.
Better benches that you can actually sit on.
Proper roofs that give real shade in summer and protection from rain.
Bright lights so women and students feel safe at night.
Clean floors and walls, no paan stains or broken seats.
Separate space or a better design for women, elderly people, and kids.
Maryam Nawaz was clear: use strong, long-lasting material. No cheap stuff that breaks in one season. Everything has to be of good quality, and the work will be checked properly.
This Is for the Millions Who Travel Every Day
Think about the aunties going to market with heavy bags.
The students are standing in 45-degree heat with school bags.
The office workers coming home late, waiting in the dark.
The old uncle who can’t stand for long.
These shelters are for them.
For years, people complained about broken or missing bus stops. Now the government is fixing it, not with speeches, but with actual construction deadlines.
Why It Feels Different This Time
Maryam Nawaz keeps saying one thing: people deserve respect when they travel.
No more treating public transport users like they don’t matter. The new shelters have to be clean, comfortable, and safe, nothing less.
She’s personally pushing for transparent monitoring. That means no cutting corners, no low-quality material, no delays.
What You’ll See in Your City Soon
If you live in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan, Rawalpindi, or any smaller city, these shelters are coming to your routes.
Some will be ready before Eid. Others before summer really hits.
Next time you’re stuck waiting for a bus, look around. Chances are, a proper shelter is already on its way.
This is the kind of change people actually feel every single day.
