Punjab’s roads turned deadly again in October, with 464 people killed in 44,797 crashes, reportedly based on Rescue 1122 data. For daily commuters on motorcycles, cars, vans, and buses, these numbers are not just statistics. They point to a risk that can affect any family on any ordinary trip.
Reportedly, 23,543 people were seriously injured during the month, while motorcycles were involved in nearly three-quarters of all crashes. That makes two-wheeler riders the most exposed road users in the province, especially in mixed traffic where one mistake can quickly turn fatal. For background, read our earlier coverage: Maryam Nawaz Directs Strict Traffic Enforcement in Punjab Fog Crisis.
The data came from Rescue 1122’s monthly review of emergency operations across Punjab, reportedly from
Lahore Had the Highest Crash Count
Among Punjab’s districts and cities, Lahore recorded the most crashes with 7,874 incidents. The report also said 8,833 motorcycles were involved in those crashes, showing how heavily the city depends on two-wheelers for travel.
Other major figures in the report were:
- Multan: 2,838 crashes
- Faisalabad: 2,615 crashes
- Gujranwala: 2,092 crashes
- Sheikhupura: 1,714 crashes
- Taunsa Sharif: 142 crashes
These totals do not mean one city is always more dangerous than another for every driver. Traffic volume, population, road design, and reporting patterns all matter. Still, the numbers show where emergency crews are seeing the heaviest load.
Why Motorcyclists Are Hit the Hardest
Motorcycles are far less forgiving than cars, buses, or trucks. Riders have little physical protection, and many travel through crowded lanes with larger vehicles close by. A crash that might be a fender-bender for a car can become a life-threatening event for a biker.
The source report quoted Emergency Services Department Secretary Dr Rizwan Naseer, who urged riders to stay on the left side of the road and avoid excessive speed. That advice matters because speed can leave riders with less time to react and less space to recover from danger.
The report did not break down the crashes by road type, age group, helmet use, weather, or time of day. It also did not identify a single cause for the full set of incidents. So the safest reading is simple: motorcycle safety remains one of Punjab’s biggest road problems.

What Drivers Should Change
These October figures should push road users toward safer habits, not fear.
For riders:
- Wear a certified helmet every trip
- Keep a visible lane position
- Slow down near crossings and intersections
- Avoid risky overtaking
For car drivers:
- Check mirrors before changing lanes
- Leave more space around motorcycles
- Avoid using a phone while driving
Families should also help young riders learn basic road rules and plan travel more carefully, especially in busy hours.
More Than Road Crashes
Reportedly, Rescue 1122 handled 231,056 emergencies in October and helped rescue more than 233,000 people across road crashes, medical calls, fires, and drowning incidents. That wider workload shows how much pressure emergency teams face, but it should not be added to the road-crash total.
The message from October is clear: Punjab’s crash toll is still too high, and motorcycles are at the center of the danger. Slower speeds, better lane discipline, and helmet use can save lives on ordinary roads.
