Motorists waiting for the Rawalpindi Ring Road will have to wait a little longer. reportedly the long-delayed project is now expected to be completed in December, as work on toll plazas, weighing stations and electronic tolling is still not finished.
The road was earlier expected to open in the first or second week of November. That timeline has now slipped, even though much of the main route is already built. The unfinished parts are the systems that will let the road operate properly for heavy traffic and daily users.
A source report at says the project covers 38.3km and has a revised cost of Rs50.4 billion. It also says the remaining work includes toll booths, weighing stations and the Intelligent Transportation System, which still need time before traffic can be allowed on the road.
What is still holding up the opening
The biggest pending items are not the pavement itself, but the control systems. Eight weighing stations are planned for heavy vehicles so they can be checked for toll collection. Construction of these stations may take another two to three weeks, and the weighing equipment will still need to be installed after that.
Toll plaza booths are also being installed at Baanth and Thalian. On top of that, the electronic toll collection system and the Intelligent Transportation System may need around two more weeks.
Another source report at says the Thalian interchange is still incomplete, even as other parts of the route are reported to be ready. That means the road may only open in stages, with some work continuing near the endpoint.
What the completed route will offer
When fully open, the Rawalpindi Ring Road is expected to work as a six-lane controlled-access road with a design speed of 120km/h. It includes five interchanges, two bridges over the Soan and Sill rivers, 12 bridges over roads and nullahs, one railway bridge near Baanth, and 11 overpasses.
The route will run between Baanth and Thalian and is meant to give drivers an alternative to congested city roads. For regular commuters, that could mean less time spent in city traffic once the road is open. For freight operators, it could offer a better path around urban bottlenecks, but only after the tolling and weighing system is ready.

What drivers should do now
For now, commuters should keep using their current routes and allow extra time for traffic in Rawalpindi. Heavy vehicle operators should also wait for official instructions on weighing station use and toll collection before planning trips on the new road.
December is the current expected timeline, but it should still be treated as a target, not a confirmed public opening date. Until an official traffic notice is issued, drivers should assume the road is not yet ready for normal use.
