Chery Chairman and President Yin Tongyue has apologised after a Chery Omoda 5 in Malaysia suffered a rear-axle failure in Johor Bahru on October 6. No injuries were reported, but the incident has now led to a recall of 8,878 vehicles in Malaysia and a temporary suspension of the model’s Vehicle Type Approval, according to a source report from

The report says the affected cars are pre-facelift Omoda 5 units, including the C and H variants. Owners will get free inspection and, where needed, replacement of faulty parts through authorised service centres. What happened in Johor Bahru

According to the source report, the rear suspension assembly detached while the SUV was being driven. Photos from the scene reportedly showed the torsion-beam assembly and both rear wheels separated from the vehicle.

Even though no one was hurt, this is still a serious safety issue. A rear-axle or suspension separation can affect control, stability, and braking confidence. That is why Malaysian authorities moved quickly to suspend the model’s Vehicle Type Approval while the technical probe continues.

For readers who follow Chery’s wider Pakistan plans, DrivePK has already covered the brand’s local growth in detail in OMODA & JAECOO in Pakistan: How Chery's Fastest-Growing Auto Brand Is Changing the Hybrid SUV Game.

Why this case is drawing extra attention

The current recall is not the first Omoda 5 axle-related issue in Malaysia. According to the same source report, Chery had already recalled 600 vehicles in 2024 over a similar concern. That earlier case was linked to a welding-process problem during a production-facility upgrade and welding-tip calibration.

What matters now is that the latest campaign is much larger. But the report also says Chery has not yet publicly explained whether the 2026 recall is directly tied to the earlier 2024 issue. So for now, the technical cause of the new failure remains under investigation.

What Malaysian owners should do

If you own an Omoda 5 in Malaysia, the practical step is simple: check your VIN through Chery Auto Malaysia’s recall process and contact an authorised workshop.

Owners should:

  • confirm whether their car is included

  • book the free inspection

  • ask for written proof of any repair work completed

  • contact the brand quickly if they notice rear suspension movement, strange noise, or changes in steering feel

The report says replacement parts are being sent to authorised workshops.

Does this affect Chery owners in Pakistan?

At this stage, the recall appears to be Malaysia-specific and should not be assumed to apply to Chery’s current Pakistan lineup. The report says Chery Master Pakistan’s locally assembled plug-in hybrid SUVs are the Tiggo 7 PHEV, Tiggo 8 PHEV, and Tiggo 9 PHEV.

It also says the Omoda 5 has been replaced in Malaysia by the newer Chery O5, which uses a different rear suspension layout.

Pakistani buyers and owners should wait for an official notice from Chery Master Pakistan or local regulators before assuming any link to vehicles here. For background on Chery’s current Pakistan plans, see Chery Master Pakistan Plans Tiggo 4 HEV, QQ BEV & Tiggo V Launch. Full Details 2026.

Why the apology matters

Yin Tongyue’s apology is more than a public gesture. It shows how seriously Chery is trying to handle product quality, recall handling, and customer trust in overseas markets. For Pakistani car buyers, the bigger lesson is clear: always look for VIN-based recall notices, service support, and transparent communication from the local distributor.

For now, this remains a Malaysia-focused safety case, with the final technical findings still pending.
