Pakistan Auto Policy May Lower Car Prices Gradually
Pakistan’s new auto policy promises gradual relief, not instant price cuts. Buyers must decide whether to book now or wait for implementation.

Pakistan’s new auto policy has been approved, but buyers should not expect a sudden drop in showroom prices. The clearest message from the announcement is that any relief will likely come step by step, not overnight.
For anyone thinking about booking a car now, the key question is simple: should you pay today or wait for the new rules to take effect? The answer depends on how soon the policy is enforced and how dealers respond.
Prime Minister’s Adviser on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar said the policy was approved after long consultations. He said car prices are expected to come down gradually under the new framework. No model-wise price cuts were announced, and no official timeline for implementation was shared in the available statement.
One of the biggest changes for buyers is a limit on advance payments. Carmakers will not be allowed to take more than 20% of a car’s price as advance payment, if the rule is applied as announced. For a car priced at Rs. 5 million, that would mean a maximum advance of Rs. 1 million.
That figure is only an example, not a confirmed booking amount for any specific model. Buyers should still check whether dealerships add other charges such as registration, insurance, freight, or accessories on top of the advance. Written booking terms matter more than verbal promises.
The policy also puts more pressure on exports. Pakistan’s auto-sector exports were described as being around $200 million at present, while the new target is $6 billion. That is a very large jump, so it should be seen as a policy goal, not a market result.
Manufacturers that miss export targets may face penalties. In theory, stronger exports can help local plants run at larger scale, improve supplier networks, and push better product quality. But those gains will take time, and they do not automatically mean cheaper cars for local buyers right away. Electric vehicles also got more attention in the policy. The financing limit for EVs has been raised to Rs. 10 million, and import duties on EV charging stations have been reduced, according to the announcement. That could help buyers who are looking at EV financing and could also support charging infrastructure providers.
Still, the real impact on EV ownership will depend on bank terms, charger availability, and service support in each city. No EV model prices were announced, and there is no confirmation yet that charging costs will fall.
The policy also adds 45 vehicle standards, but the available announcement did not list them or explain how they will be enforced. That matters because compliance costs can affect how quickly any price benefit reaches buyers.
For now, the safest approach is to compare current dealer offers with the total amount payable, not just the advance. Buyers who need a car urgently should not assume an immediate discount. Those who can wait may watch for the official notification, enforcement rules, and manufacturer booking updates before deciding.
