Pakistan’s daily fuel pricing system is meant to keep pump rates closer to world oil markets, but it also means motorists can feel price swings sooner. According to a source report, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik told the National Assembly that petroleum prices are now calculated through a seven-day average, a method meant to smooth sudden jumps in global markets without waiting for a longer billing cycle.

That matters for drivers because the new setup is not only about faster relief when global prices fall. It also means any rise in international oil costs can reach Pakistani consumers more quickly than before.

Why the government says it uses a seven-day average

According to the source report at the minister said world oil prices often move sharply in a short time, while the trend becomes clearer after three to four days. The seven-day average is meant to give the regulator a better read on recent market movement instead of relying on one day’s price.

OGRA then uses that formula to work out domestic petroleum prices. The report says Pakistan had earlier used fortnightly pricing, and in older systems, prices were revised monthly and even annually. Daily pricing was introduced in July 2026.

For ordinary motorists, the main change is timing. If international prices drop, that relief may now reach local pump prices sooner. But if global costs rise, the increase may also show up faster.

Why Islamabad says daily pricing helps fuel supply

According to the source report, the government argues that keeping local prices closer to international rates can reduce pressure on supply chains. Officials also say more frequent revisions may help discourage hoarding and profiteering, since traders have less reason to wait for a big one-time change.

The same logic is also tied to imports. The report says the government believes daily pricing makes it easier for suppliers to keep bringing in petroleum products during unstable global market conditions.

That is the official case. It does not guarantee cheaper fuel. It only changes how quickly global movement is passed through to local prices.

Diesel relief came from a margin cut

The source report also says refineries agreed to another cut in the margin used to calculate high-speed diesel prices. The maximum HSD crack margin has now been capped at $38 per barrel.

That helped drive the Rs7.69 per litre diesel reduction announced for October 20, 2026. But readers should not treat that figure as fixed, because daily pricing means rates can keep moving after a single announcement.

For this reason, diesel users may be watching the system most closely. Transport operators, delivery businesses, and farm-linked users all feel diesel changes in their running costs, fares, and service charges.

What motorists should expect now

The biggest change for Pakistani drivers is less certainty. Under daily pricing, today’s rate may not stay in place for long. That means families, commuters, fleet owners, and small businesses may need to budget with a small buffer instead of assuming the last announced price will hold.

For the latest price changes, motorists should check official announcements before major refuelling. Two recent DrivePK reports also show how quickly rates have been shifting:

The basic takeaway is simple: daily pricing can bring relief faster, but it can also pass on pain faster. For motorists, that means paying closer attention to official updates before filling up.
