A BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme has crashed during closed-track testing at a reported 360 km/h, but the driver survived without serious injuries, reportedly at and The incident was a test crash, not proof that a road-going car can safely survive every impact at that speed.

Footage released by Yangwang on November 2 shows the electric hypercar losing control on a closed circuit, then striking barriers on both sides of the track. The front and rear of the car were badly damaged, and the rear axle assembly came apart. Even so, the carbon-fibre passenger cell appears to have stayed mostly intact.

The driver left the car without help, and a hospital check reportedly found no serious injuries. That detail is the biggest reason this crash has drawn so much attention. At extreme speed, even a violent impact can still leave enough survival space if the cabin structure holds and the crash forces are not taken straight into the occupant area.

The U9 Xtreme is reported to make about 2,220 kW, or roughly 2,977 hp, from four electric motors. It also uses an 80 kWh battery pack and a 1,200-volt electrical system. Those figures show how far electric performance cars have pushed in a very short time. For readers in Pakistan, this is less about buying one and more about what high-end EV engineering can do when safety structure is part of the design.

One key point is that the 360 km/h figure refers to the first barrier impact, not necessarily the top speed reached during the run. Source reports say the car was being prepared for another attempt to go beyond 500 km/h when the crash happened. They also say the driver eased off the accelerator, tried to correct the car, and then the rear kept swinging before the first hit.

What remains unclear is why the car became unstable in the first place. BYD has not released full crash telemetry, so it is not possible to say from the available reports whether the cause was tire trouble, driver error, setup, or something else. Extreme-speed testing can reveal problems that normal road driving would never expose.

The reports also note that the battery did not visibly catch fire in the released footage. That matters, because EV crash fear often centers on battery damage. Still, no one should read this as proof that the car is safe in every type of crash, or that the battery system was unharmed in every way.

The U9 Xtreme had already drawn headlines for a reported 496.22 km/h single-direction run at Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany, reportedly at and the other linked source report above. That figure was not an official two-way average record, but it shows why this car is being watched so closely.

For Pakistani readers, the real takeaway is simple: this is a major safety-engineering story, not a local buying signal. Before any hypercar matters here, buyers would still need local support, homologation, parts access, and battery repair options. A driver surviving a 360 km/h test crash is remarkable, but it is not a licence to trust any car at that speed.
