Karachi is set for another round of road work, with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation planning to begin construction and rehabilitation on around 140 roads in the next few days. reportedly the city-wide programme will cost about Rs13 billion and will cover roads in all seven districts.
For daily commuters, that could mean better roads later on, but also more slow traffic, lane blockages, and temporary diversions while work is underway. Motorists, school vans, delivery riders, and public transport users should expect some disruption near active construction zones.
The tendering process has already been completed, and work orders are expected to be issued shortly, according to the report.
Key parts of the Karachi road plan
The programme includes work on roads in different parts of the city, though the full list has not been made public in the source report. A few named roads are:
- Jahangir Road
- S.M. Taufiq Road, from Teen Hatti to Sohrab Goth
- Gulbai-Shershah Road
- Tori Bangash Road, which links Keamari and West districts
Reportedly, Tori Bangash Road is about five kilometres long and is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Streetlights are also part of the work
The city is also planning a separate Rs1 billion project to replace streetlights on 41 major roads. Reportedly, this work should take around two to two-and-a-half months.
That matters for commuters and neighbourhood residents because road upgrades are not only about fresh asphalt. Better lighting can help night-time driving, reduce dark patches on major routes, and make crossings easier to spot. Still, until the work is completed, drivers may need to deal with construction crews and equipment in the same corridors.
More projects are coming alongside the road repairs
The road programme is not the only project moving ahead in Karachi. reportedly a new flyover on Garden Nishtar Road is estimated at around Rs1 billion, with groundbreaking planned by November 20 and completion targeted within 100 days.
The report also says the Chakor Nala Expressway is expected to open within 30 to 35 days, while a nearly nine-kilometre dual carriageway linking Gulistan-e-Johar with University Road is under construction and targeted for completion by January.
These are still announced timelines, not finished results. Dates can change if there are delays in work, supplies, weather, or utility shifting.
What Karachi drivers should expect
If the plan moves ahead on schedule, the city may see smoother roads and better links in several areas. But road rebuilding on this scale usually brings short-term pain first. Drivers should plan extra travel time, especially during peak hours, and check local traffic updates before heading through affected areas.
The long-term result will depend on more than just resurfacing. Drainage, lane markings, road strength, lighting, and regular maintenance will all matter if the city wants these roads to stay usable for longer.
For now, Karachi commuters should prepare for construction work before they see the benefit.
